APRIL 2010 -- PREECE'S PUB -- ERIC PREECE

Member of the Month Q&A

Does your MANLAND have a name?

The name of my MANLAND is "Pub Preece."

Where is your MANLAND located?

My MANLAND is my one-car garage. I live in a condo, so space is a premium. I had to maximize what little I have!

Why do you have a MANLAND
?

I have a MANLAND so my wife and I have some place to hangout after we workout in the summer. What better way recover from a great workout than drinking a beer!

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND
?

My inspiration was MANLAND NORTH. I saw his posting on You Tube and thought that it was the coolest garage I had ever seen.

What is your favorite MANLAND moment to date?

My most favorite moment would have to be my wife's birthday party last month. We had friends, booze, beer and live music. Doesn’t get any better than that!

What is your most cherished MANLAND possession?

My Bar! I designed and built it all on my own. The bar is actually designed on file cabinet slides, which allows me to slide the bar back to still get my 1994 Mustang Cobra in the garage. Turned out perfect!

Which brand of beer do you most often stock in your fridge or kegerator
?

Mostly either Leinenkugel’s (anyflavor) and Labatt Blue Light.

What is your favorite band / CD to crank in MANLAND?

I wouldn’t say that I have a favorite band/CD to crank out in my MANLAND. I put the I-Touch with the BOSE docking station on the bar and its cranked out for every song. Friends use it like it's a jukebox – it’s awesome!

If you could share a beer with one person (famous or not) in your MANLAND, who would it be
?

Are you kidding me? There isn’t a better choice: John Daly! He is a real MANLAND’s man. Golf, beer, gambling – and more beer. What a life style!

If money were no object, what one item would you purchase for your MANLAND?

A new 2011 Mustang Cobra for my MANLAND. Remember, it was built to fit one!

Words of advice for those just starting to create their MANLAND/Mancave
:

Have fun! I started this whole project in October of last year and completed the bar in December. I think I have had a party or get together almost every weekend since. My friends loved the idea and now it has become the place to play! One last note though … a MANLAND isn’t a MANLAND unless you have some rules, so be sure to post them. It’s always a conversation piece.

JUNE 2010 -- THE MANROOM -- TRAVIS SPARKS

Member of the Month Q&A

Does your MANLAND have a name?

THE MAN ROOM OR THE MAN’S ROOM, depending on who you ask. The reason I said it is also referred to as the MAN’S ROOM is because of an anagram that was created for the space. Much Alcohol Needed Sunday Recover Occurs On Monday.

Why do you have a MANLAND?

Originally it was a place for just me and a few close friends to watch the game. Over the past 10 years the room has grown with new friends, along with my old friends getting married and having kids, and my daughter Taylor growing up and getting interested in football as well. Now we typically have about 12-15 on Sundays to watch the Colts games. It's an open invite to everyone who wants to watch the game to come over and join in the experience.

Where is your MANLAND located?

It’s an addition to my detached two car garage. The current room is approx. 14’ x 22’. It originally started out at 14 ’x 12’. We also use the other space in the garage for a smoking room / overflow room on busy game days.

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND?

It originally started out over 10 years ago as the basement from the show “That 70’s Show” meets “The King of Queens” garage. Just a place where you can hangout with friends and drink, spill shit and not worry, and have a great time. We started with two old couches, a 19” TV, and the cooler to put your feet on.

What is your favorite MANLAND moment to date?

Colts winning Super Bowl XLI. With so many heartbreaking years that was one hell of a party, plus had the entire garage filled for the night with over 50+ GUESTS!!!!

What is your most cherished MANLAND possession?

Physical Possession: My grandfather’s Marine service flag from his funeral. Non-Physical: All my friends and family that makes the MAN ROOM’s atmosphere what it is.

Which brand of beer do you most often stock in your fridge or kegerator?

I always have something different in the fridge. I have really enjoyed discovering new beers for about the past two years. The kegerator typically has Bud Light or something comparable for all to enjoy.

What is your favorite band / CD to crank in MANLAND?

The official band of the MAN ROOM is AC/DC.

If you could share a beer with one person (famous or not) in your MANLAND, who would it be??

My before mentioned grandfather, “Papaw Jim.”

If money were no object, what one item would you purchase for your MANLAND?

Limo service home for all my guests.

Words of advice for those just starting to create their MANLAND/Mancave:

JULY 2010 -- THE SHEDBAR -- GOOCH!

Member of the Month Q&A

Does your MANLAND have a name?

My space is called SHEDBAR, for obvious reasons.

Why do you have a MANLAND?

We bought or house last April. My wife said to do what I wanted in the shed. I think deep down all men want a MANLAND, so now I have one.

Where is your MANLAND located?

SHEDBAR is a shed behind my house in the back yard.

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND?

I really had no inspiration initially. I just threw some beer signs on the walls of my shed. Now I am inspired by the members of Manland. There are some awesome caves on here and a lot of great ideas.

What is your favorite MANLAND moment to date?

My birthday back in May. We probably had 30 people at my house and in the SHEDBAR. It was a good time being with friends.

What is your most cherished MANLAND possession?

I love the picture of R. Lee Ermy choking me. I also have his autograph on an 8 X 10 glossy in the shed. I also love my neons.

Which brand of beer do you most often stock in your fridge or kegerator?

SHEDBAR would probably be sponsored by Miller Lite.

What is your favorite band / CD to crank in MANLAND?

CLUTCH is my favorite band. Their album Elephant Riders gets the most play.

If you could share a beer with one person (famous or not) in your MANLAND, who would it be??

That's hard to say. I would settle for a visit from any Manland member and it would be worth it.

If money were no object, what one item would you purchase for your MANLAND?

This may sound stupid but I would insulate the inside and purchase an AC unit. SHEDBAR gets hot with no climate control. Once I had AC, I would by a flat screen TV.

Words of advice for those just starting to create their MANLAND/Mancave:
Have a plan. Stay within your means. Never turn down help or free stuff. Have fun. That's what it is all about.

Does your MANLAND have a name?

Curts BuddyBar. Named by a childhood friend, Ken "Stretch" Hansel. I explained the concept of a sports bar theme with pictures of friends and family playing ball or racing a car. Adventure and everything else to do with our spare time.

Where is your MANLAND located?

While having our home of 25 years remodeled a few years back, We added a 2 car garage onto the house. 1/2 of the original 2 car garage was already split in half years earlier. It was a spare bedroom. We took out the side wall to that spare room and installed 16" sliding glass doors to our front porch area of our home.

Why do you have a MANLAND?

In Northern California we are able to eat outside 85% of the year, and we do. We wanted an inside outside type feeling to the room too. We live over 100 yards from the road, our front yard can be used like many back yards are.

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND?

While sitting in the sports bar at Sac Metro Airport waiting for a plane. Looking around the establishment at Joe Montana, Barry Bonds, and the boys all over their walls I thought to myself. FEBRUARY 2012 --MANLAND NORTH'S BENT PROP PUB

Member of the Month Q&A

Does your MANLAND have a name?

My garage was originally given the name “Manland” by my good buddy and fellow MANLANDER Jason. It was later changed to “Manland North” because I live north of my brother, Manland South. So we became known as North and South ...

I recently came up with the name “Bent Prop Pub” because I had an old aluminum prop that I pulled from a junk pile at work. I might make some T-shirts that say, “I got bent at the Bent Prop Pub!”

Where is your MANLAND located?

It is the one-car side of a three-car garage. But I'm slowly taking over the other side as well ...

Why do you have a MANLAND?

The idea came to me one Sunday afternoon as I was chilling with a cold beer in my garage. I had just finished mowing the lawn and it hit me: I had a beer fridge, an old couch, and cable running into the garage. I spent about a month consolidating Christmas shit, kids bikes, etc. before I was able to focus on the layout. The original Manland North had tan walls, a dartboard, a TV and a wall-mounted Basketball game. My first neon – Coors Light – was given to me from a neighbor. It broke about a year later in an unfortunate beer-drinking accident. (Moment of silence, please!) I wish I had pictures of the garage from those early days.

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND?

The spark for creating my Manland was to have a place to hang out with my bro when he would come up to visit. My wife loves that I have a dedicated spot that's out of the house for he and I to chill out – pre-garage days, my bro and I would hang out in the house. Out in the garage, there's no worrying about picking up beer bottles, smelling "acceptable," etc. And we can do dude stuff like fart, burp, scratch shit that itches, spit sunflower seeds on the floor, and cuss. HELL YA!

What is your favorite MANLAND moment to date?

Anytime I get to hang with my bro or another Manlander here is awesome. But if I had to pick a specific event, it would be my 40th B Day party three years ago or last year when the Packers won the Superbowl. That was an incredible moment that was shared with the family.

What is your most cherished MANLAND possession?

Probably a few of my neons. In particular, my Corona Sea Plane, Boddingtons Bee, and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. My Green Bay Packers hat that Aaron Rodgers signed last July would also be on that list.

Which brand of beer do you most often stock in your fridge or kegerator?

It used to be Corona. I then started doing beer reviews here on Manland three years ago and became a craft-beer convert. If you open my beer fridge on any weekend, you'll always find something new – I love trying different beers from around the world. I'm particularity fond of Brown Ales, Stouts, IPAs, Belgian Dubbels, Flanders Brown/Red, Sours, and English-style brews. Today I'm looking forward to trying a sour Brown Ale from New Belgium.

What is your favorite band / CD to crank in MANLAND?

Usually something from AC/DC, although as a musician, I dig most all styles of music. The neighbors get to hear anything from Pantera to ZZ Top, Rush to Johnny Cash, or Throwdown to Miles Davis. Sometimes they hear it louder than I'm sure they prefer depending on the occasion and number of beers consumed ...

If you could share a beer with one person (famous or not) in your MANLAND, who would it be?

First and foremost, my Grandfather William. He died when I was 8, so I never really got to know him very well. He owned a construction company and was the Mayor of the small town South and I are from in Upper Michigan. His work ethic still inspires me to this day.

Second on that list would be Kim Kardashian so my Son Erik could meet her. (HA!)

If money was no object, what one item would you purchase for your MANLAND?

Kim Kardashian so my Son Erik could meet her.

Words of advice for those just starting to create their MANLAND/Mancave:

Enjoy the process and don't get too anxious to finish. Your Manland will never be complete – you'll always be searching for new items, etc. That's what makes this so much fun. Also, use websites like ours and mancavesite.org for inspiration and ideas. You can always ask our members how they created a particular item or where they found a sign, etc. Just have fun with it and share the process with your fellow Manlanders along the way.

I'd like to say thanks to my brother, MANLAND SOUTH, for having the inspiration to create this site three years ago. It originally started as a way for the two of us to share pictures of our garages with each other and have a central spot to hang out online when we couldn't hang in person. It has grown to over 1,300 members around the world and has inspired both of us. Thanks to all of our members who make this site what it is – CHEERS!

Why do you have a MANLAND?

Three kids, two cats, and a mortgage. The 3-2-1 plan.

What was the inspiration for creating your MANLAND?

I've always been a sportsfan, and on a trip to Chicago I bought some stadium seats. I then bought more stadium seats when the St. Louis Arena came down, and then I had a collection of stadium seats. Where do stadiums seats belong? A stadium of course, so that was the genesis of my "basement stadium". That was about 15-20 years ago.

Words of advice for those just starting to create their MANLAND/Mancave:

Hang in there. it took me a long time to see my dream come true. Also, marry a wife that is as awesome as my wife, that helps a lot.

MEMBER OF THE YEAR 2012

This month's feature showcases an Honorary Member of Manland. Please help Manland North and Manland South pay tribute to our Dad, William (also known as "Bill" or "Willy") who passed away on September 23rd, 2012.

Off a small dirt road in Michigan's Upper Peninsula sits a hand-built log cabin known as the "Tail's End Lodge." Dad built this cabin for Deer hunting season decades ago, and he turned it into a Manland mecca. It features a custom-built bar, plenty of games, beer refrigerator, bunk area, a TV for watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, sauna, and numerous collectables. He spent many weekends at the "lodge" with family and friends enjoying the solitude of Michigan's outdoors.

He made most of the artwork and outdoor-themed decorations in the cabin. He was an amazing painter, artist, and craftsman. We visited the cabin and could see that he had plans to upgrade the bar top and several other areas that had fallen to neglect over time due to his health.

Fellow Manlanders, please raise a mug of cold beer in honor of "Willy."

He will be missed.

"WILLY'S TAIL'S END LODGE."

Raise a Mug to Willy!

Come drink and be merry
Turning grief to good cheer.
Till we stand with him
Again drawing near.
Here's health to his family
And one to his lass.
We hold up a pint
And all share from one glass.
Let us drink and be merry
Turning grief to delight.
Till that day when we see him
And again hold him tight!

I'm with Confer on the MoM renaming "The Willy Award"!
