MANLAND: The Ultimate Mancave Site

In Beer, BBQ and Mancaves we trust!!

2011 UPDATE: I thought I'd bump this review so those of you who didn't have the opportunity to read it last Summer can check it out. Nearly all of these Summer beers are still available this year. Let me know if you have a chance to try some of these great Summer Brews. BARMEN! -- MLN

YOU’VE GOTTA LOVE SUMMER: boating, fishing, great beer, good BBQ and the bikini. Brewers recognize that this is a special time of the year by creating “Summer seasonal” beer offerings. This style is usually characterized by light-bodied beers that are “sessionable.”

What is a “session” beer? It’s one that is best served cold, usually has an alcohol content of 5% or less, and goes great with all of the previously mentioned activities.

Just for my MANLAND buds, I’ve rounded up sixteen of this Summer’s beer offerings for a review. (Total cost? You don’t want to know.) My criteria was simple: the bottle had to mention “Summer” in the title or specifically be a seasonal offering. Most of these beers are either of the German Kölsch style, a Pilsner, an American Wheat, or an Ale flavored with lemon, orange, or honey. (Not my favorite, for the record.) I know there are many more Summer beer offerings available, but I’ve included as many as I could find on the West Coast.

THE LINEUP

From left to right: Alaskan Brewing Summer, Sierra Nevada Summerfest, Pyramid Curveball, Anchor Summer Beer, Blue Moon Honeymoon, New Belgium Skinny Dip, Widmer Sunburn, Gordon Biersch SommerBrau, Deschutes Twilight Ale, Sam Adams Summer Ale, Saranac Summer Brew, & Red Hook Rope Swing.

As I write this review, Summer is in full swing. It’s 95+ degrees here in my California-based MANLAND and I can smell BBQ in the air as Nickleback’s “This Afternoon” plays on the stereo. Ready? Set. Drink …

BRAND: Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., San Jose, CA

NAME: Sommerbrau

ABV: 4.6%

IBUs: 25 of 100

STYLE: Kölsch

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:SommerBrau is a Kölsch-style beer. Kölsch literally means the beer of Cologne, Germany. This beer style is a light-bodied beer fermented using a special top-fermenting yeast strain, which we import specially from Germany, brewing it true to style. It is brewed with 80% pale-malted barley and 20% malted wheat. The pinpoint bitterness of the German Tettnang hops and crisp finish make this beer perfect for summertime enjoyment.”

You may not have heard of Gordon Biersch beers if you live on the East Coast. The brewer is located in San Jose, CA, not far from where Manland South and North live. Although the brewer is in California, the company makes beers in the German tradition. Brewer Dan Gordon learned how to brew at Germany’s Weihenstephan – which is the “most renowned brewing school in the world.”

I’ve reviewed a few German Kölsch style beers here on MANLAND. The first was Pyramid’s Curveball and then Alaskan Brewing’s Summer. This style is noted for being brewed in a specific region of Germany and is noted for its “clean, crisp, delicately balanced flavor with very subtle fruit flavors and aromas. Subdued maltiness throughout leads to a pleasantly refreshing tang in the finish.”

GB’s version of this classic German beer has a big “tang” to the aroma. True to the style, there’s a soft malt body with a tangy, slighty bitter aftertaste. This one was my least favorite Kölsch-style beer in our roundup, however, due to the beer’s slightly apple juice like, syrupy sweetness. Decent, but not the best interpretation.

BRAND: Pyramid Breweries, Seattle, WA

NAME: Curve Ball Blonde Ale

ABV: 5.0%

IBUs: 18 of 100

STYLE: Kölsch

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Our deceptively drinkable golden summer seasonal is a crisp, clean-tasting, cold lagered ale. This frosty thirst quencher is the perfect accompaniment to summer adventures. Good with Seafood and Grilled Brats.”

Pyramid is best known for its Haywire American Hefeweisen. I reviewed the brewer’s Curveball Kölsch style beer last Summer. Curveball is one of three Kölsch style beers in this roundup and in my opinion, it is the boldest tasting of the bunch. There is a very pronounced hop note to the beer that is tangy ala a lemon. This would be a good beer to drink while eating a nice slab of fish and it has much better body than the Gordon Biersch offering.

BRAND: Alaskan Brewing Co., Juneau, Alaska

NAME: Summer Ale

ABV: 5.3%

IBUs: 18 of 100

STYLE: Kölsch

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer. Enjoy this Kölsch-style beer with delicately flavored foods like fresh, wild Alaska crab or halibut.”

Alaskan Brewing Co. is one of my favorite brewers. I have yet to have a bad beer from them. Summer Ale is no exception; I first discovered it last Summer during an outing that included fishing. Summer Ale has the most subdued “tang” note of the three, but it is more in the aftertaste versus initial sip. This beer is just plain drinkable and is the most sessionable of the three Kölschs. Summer Ale would be great in the cooler on a boat, whether it be a cruise around the lake or a serious fishing session for largemouth Bass with plastic worms or jigs. And it would go great with those fish on the BBQ once back at camp. One of my favorite beers in this review. It earns a KICK ASS BEER AWARD.

BRAND: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA

NAME: Summerfest

ABV: 5.0%

IBUs: 28 of 100

STYLE: American Pilsner

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Our Summerfest® is a refreshing, pilsner-style lager. Its incredible smoothness comes from an extra-long lagering period. Lighter in body than our ales but just as complex in character, Summerfest® quenches your thirst with big aroma and a tangy hop bite.”

I gave Summerfest a KICK ASS BEER AWARD a few months ago on MANLAND. I’ve since purchased a few more sixers of this beer since the review.

It’s interesting to try beers by themselves and in a review setting such as this as I noted a few flavors this time around that differed from my original thoughts of the beer. In my April 2010 review I said, “There’s a slight “breadiness” aroma and flavor that is accentuated by a subtle hop bitterness that lingers just a bit on the aftertaste. In a way, Summerfest’s hop “tang” reminds me of a German Kolsch-style beer, but Summerfest has a bit more body.” Those flavors are still there but I also noted a grassy, almost hay-like Bavarian malt / hop flavor that reminded me of a great German Pilsner beer called, “Bitburger.” There’s a grainy American Pilsner aspect as well. I wasn’t as impressed with this beer in this setting, but it’s still a solid Summer seasonal offering. I’d buy it again – but I’m not sure I’d give it another KICK ASS BEER AWARD.

BRAND: Saranac / Matt Brewing Co., Utica, NY

NAME: Summer Brew

ABV: 3.5%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: German Radler

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:For nearly 100 years, Europeans have mixed lemonade and beer as a refreshing beverage during the summer months. We continue this tradition with Saranac Summer Brew – a refreshing blend of lemonade and lager. Kick back, relax and enjoy!

What style of beer is a “German Radler?” In Germany, it’s a beer mixed with lemon/lime soda. (A Radler can also be referred to as a “Shandy.”) New York’s Saranac makes an American version of the Radler called, “Summer Brew.” They mix North American Pale Malt with lemon juice for a 3.5% ABV low alcohol session / hot-weather beer.

Summer Brew had one of the darker-colored appearances of the roundup and despite having lemon juice in the mix, I smelled something sweeter than reminded me of honey. The beer has a cereal-like sweetness that is similar to drinking Frosted Flakes cereal. Weird, I know. This one was best when it came right out of the fridge as the sweetness wasn’t as aggressive as it was when the beer warmed up. Lemon juice aside, Summer Brew is kind of bland. This might be a good beer for the wife. In fact, mine said she liked it. I wouldn’t buy it again, however.

BRAND: Sam Adams, Boston, MA

NAME: Summer Ale

ABV: 5.3%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: American Pale Wheat Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Samuel Adams Summer Ale is an American wheat ale. This summer seasonal uses malted wheat, lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, a rare pepper from Africa first used as a brewing spice in the 13th century, to create a crisp taste, spicy flavor and medium body. The ale fermentation imparts a background tropical fruit note reminiscent of mangos and peaches. All of these flavors come together to create a thirst quenching, clean finishing beer perfect for those warm summer days.”

What’s the quickest way to neuter a MANLAND brother? Serve him a beer that claims to have tropical fruit notes reminiscent of mangos and peaches. Seriously. WTF. I first crossed paths with this beer in Sam Adams Summer Styles 12-pack Sampler. Sammy uses a unique spice called Grains of Paradise in this pale wheat ale, and they give the beer a flavor profile you’ll either love -- or not. In the right setting this isn’t a bad beer. I, however, just cannot get past the “lemon pledge” aroma and flavor. In fact, I might need therapy to get over it. Guess who liked this beer? That’s right. My wife. After drinking this beer, I have an incredible urge to start dusting stuff.

BRAND: Blue Moon Brewing Company, Lyons, CO

NAME: Honey Moon Summer Ale

ABV: 5.2%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: American Pale Wheat Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Made with Madhava clover honey from Lyons, Colorado and orange peel for a dry taste with a sweet finish.”

Honey Moon Summer Ale. The ultimate Summer beer … for chicks. My wife did back flips after tasting this beer. We even went to the store to buy her a six pack of the beer for a BBQ last weekend, including two oranges to slice up and place in the glass.

I find this beer WAY too sweet. It has a syrupy body and flat finish despite the active carbonation. Sorry, but this honeymoon is over for me. May I never drink this beer again. Til death do us part. But hey, it got my wife to drink a beer – which doesn’t happen often. This beer is Bunco approved!

BRAND: Anchor Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

NAME: Summer Beer

ABV: 4.6%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: American Pale Wheat Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Despite living in the Nor Cal Bay Area for over 30 years, I just recently tried Anchor Steam beer and really enjoyed it. So I had to include the brewer’s Summer Beer. Turns out that this was one of my favorite beers in this review. Although Summer Beer uses wheat, it is obviously filtered, because it does not have the hazy look of a Hefeweisen. It has incredible clarity - looking through the beer is like looking through an amber-colored magnifying glass. And that head – freaking HUGE. (Pour slowly.) Anchor says the large head is due to the “protein contributed by the wheat.” (All jokes welcomed.) If we gave an award for BEST HEAD, Anchor Summer Beer would win. (All jokes welcomed.)

How does it taste? Excellent. Light/medium, lagerish body with a slight bitter, tangy aftertaste that is Kolsch-like. My sixer didn’t last long in my MANLAND. If you can find this beer, I highly recommend it. It earns a KICK ASS BEER AWARD.

BRAND: Widmer Brothers, Portland, OR

NAME: Sunburn Summer Brew

ABV: 4.3%

IBUs: 20 of 100

STYLE: American Blonde Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Sunburn Summer Brew is a very smooth, refreshing, sessionable ale. Sunburn is light in color, body, and bitterness, but by no means light in flavor. Sunburn’s point of differentiation is that it delivers an abundance of flavor via the new hop called Citra. Citra is aptly named for its thirst quenching citrus flavor and aroma. Sunburn Summer Brew is lighter in alcohol, full in flavor with a crisp finish making this a great beer for any summer afternoon. goes well with Yardwork, flip-flops, Backyard BBQs, front porch swings, and lighter dishes like Grilled Halibut with Lemon-Basil Vinaigrette, Orange Glazed Chicken, Grilled Scallop Kabobs, and chips with fresh salsa.”

I’ve reviewed – and routinely buy – Widmer Bro’s beers. The Portland, OR based brewer is known for excellent brews. Sunburn Summer is a seasonal beer for them and it uses a “new” hop variety called Citra. Sometimes, however, new ain’t better.

I don’t know about you, but I hate sunburns. They sting like hell. Then your skin peels. It’s 150% no fun. So I’m not sure why the marketing geniuses at Widmer would name their beer after something so repulsive.

Which leads me to how this beer tastes. The first time I bought this beer was up in Oregon. I accidentally spilled a bottle on the floor and was struck by a unique scent. I cracked a fresh beer and pushed through it. I eventually finished the sixer. I then bought another sixer for this review, cracked a beer, and was immediately reminded of that “first spill” event in Oregon. Same “scent.” A beer geek might be able to pull hints of grapefruit / pineapple from this beer. I, however, noted something much less appealing lurking in the aroma and taste.

What is it?

Sunburn Summer Brew smells like cat piss. That’s right. Freakin feline urine. I’m not sure if it’s the new Citra hop or something else, but this beer has a very ammonia-like, ripe “cat pee” aroma to it. I let my wife smell it. She said, “what is THAT?” I said, “cat pee?” She responded, “OMG … that’s it.”

And so my fellow MANLAND bros … do not buy this beer. That is, unless you have some weird-ass cat fetish.

BRAND: Deschutes Brewery, Portland, OR

NAME: Twilight Summer Ale

ABV: 5.0%

IBUs: 35 of 100

STYLE: American Pale Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:The top’s down. The burgers are grilling. The shadows are long. The days stretch late into the evening. Summer has its own rules. And, at Deschutes, its own beer. We brew Twilight Ale to be a lighter, but full-flavored ale with a balanced malt profile and a harmonious blend of four hops. Then a final heady dose of bold Amarillos creates a distinctive finish. We took Twilight as a challenge. The chance to prove that light doesn’t mean boring. Some beers go perfectly with foods, this one pairs with lawn chairs, bare feet and life kicked-back. Best enjoyed chilled and served outside.”

Imagine taking a great Pacific Northwest micro-brew and making it a light, refreshing session beer minus the hop bomb aftertaste. Congrats, you’ve just had a Twilight Summer Ale. This beer has a nice citrusy hop zippiness with a high-quality flavor that’s known from one of the Pac NW’s best brewers. Great on a scorchin’ Summer afternoon. Serve very cold.

BRAND: New Belgium Brewing, Fort Collins, CO

NAME: Skinny Dip

ABV: 4.2%

IBUs: Unpublished

STYLE: American Blonde Ale

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Ever tried a Skinny Dip? You wouldn't be alone. Featured by both Men's Journal and the Today Show as a favorite summer brew, this full-bodied, highly drinkable beer makes a splash every summer in our Seasonal line-up. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, giving the beer complexity that's surprisingly refreshing.”

I reviewed Skinny Dip last July on MANLAND. New Belgium beers seem to have a unique “house flavor” to all of their beers. In the review, I stated, “The beer has a malt-tinged body with a splash of hops. It’s very drinkable, but it has a “bread/biscuit-like" body that is an acquired taste. The carbonation makes Skinny Dip very drinkable on a hot day, and the unique lime infusion adds a bit of sizzle.”

So I liked Skinny Dip served by itself. In the context of this review – when comparing Summer-style beers – I didn’t like this one nearly as much. In the spirit of being fair, I am going to pop the top on a Skinny Dip as I write this to make sure my observations this time around still hold.

PISSSSST. Ok, top popped. When consumed by itself, Skinny Dip is a good beer. It has a unique yeast profile that some just won’t dig, however. Smelling/tasting Skinny Dip in the context of other Summer beers reveals a “musty, almost mold like” taste that is 180 degrees opposite of every other beer in this review. I have to attribute that to NB’s devotion to a particular taste signature. The lime infusion? I didn’t smell/taste it this time around.

Some will dig this beer, others will hate it. As a Summer beer, it just doesn’t fit the “mold.”

BRAND: Red Hook, Woodinville, WA

NAME: Rope Swing Summer Pilsner

ABV: 5.3%

IBUs: 25 of 100

STYLE: Czech-style Pilsner

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Rope Swing Summer Pilsner is brewed in a traditional Czech style and is the first pilsner Redhook Ale Brewery has ever released. Rope Swing Summer Pilsner offers a very soft palate and malt flavors that are offset by a medium dose of destinct Czech hops to bring out its authentic flavors. The refreshing beer finishes with a clean, bright, thirst-quenching quality. Rope Swing pairs nicely with barbecued chicken, bratwurst, spicy food, fresh fish, and green salad.”

Rope Swing is one of those beers that doesn’t have anything out of the ordinary. It’s the kind of beer you could pop while throwing baseballs back and forth with your Son. It’s the perfect beer to drink while standing next to the grille. It would be a great brew to swig while putting the boat away after a round of waterskiing or wakeboarding. Or for cleaning that stringer of fish you just slayed on the lake. Overall, Rope Swing is a beer that will appeal to both macro- and micro-beer drinkers. It has elements that both will appreciate: excellent drinkability for the red-plastic-cup crowd and enough body and hints of good ingredients for the craft beer crowd.

BRAND: Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Paso Robles, CA

NAME: Solace

ABV: 6%

IBUs: 15 of 100

STYLE: American Wheat

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Firestone Walker presents Solace, an ode to warmer weather in the northern hemisphere. A hint of citrus fruit and clove aroma are followed by tangy dry malt flavor and a silky finish making it an approachable and refreshing session beer. We bring you this beer unfettered, a craftily unfiltered ale full of flavor and perfectly constructed to compliment those lazy warm days ahead. Ideal for washing down fish tacos or other south o’ the border-inspired dishes.”

A beer that’s good with fish tacos? Sounds right up my alley. Solace has a blazing orange haze color to the beer and a decent amount of carbonation. There’s a sweet citrus smell that reminds me of Bell’s Oberon beer. The unfiltered wheat body also reminds me of Sierra Nevada’s excellent Kellerweis. It’s a bit on the sweet side, but not enough to have your man card pulled. Solace is a killer beer for a hot day … now if I only had some tasty fish tacos around ….

BRAND: Henry Weinhard’s Brewing Co, Hood River, OR

NAME: Summer Ale

ABV: 4.9%

IBUs: 25 of 100

STYLE: Kölsch

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Our newest seasonal, Summer Ale, is inspired by the full-bodied Kolsch beers of Cologne, Germany, known for their blonde color and smooth taste. Summer Ale fits that mold, but is crisper and more refreshing because we age it at colder temperatures than most ales. Its subtle hop presence and clean taste perfectly complements grilled halibut, red snapper or tilapia. Summer Ale is only available in the warm, sunny days of summer. If only it could stay like this all year.”

I stumbled on this beer during a trip to Oregon a few weeks ago. It was on sale for $9.99 a twelve pack – and it’s a Summer style beer – so I had to buy it. Henry Weinhards has been in the biz of brewing beer for 150 years and are a West Coast staple. Some guys love it – some think it’s cheap beer.

Summer Ale surprised me. It’s a German Kölsch style beer like the first three beers reviewed here and it has all the earmarks of the style: soft malt, low bitterness, and a subtle tang to the finish. There’s a bit more carbonation to it than the standard Kölsch beer, which makes it very drinkable, but also accentuates the graininess of the malts. Of the four Kölsches reviewed here, this would be my third favorite, right above the Gordon Biersch SommerBrau offering.

BRAND: Bell’s Brewing Inc, Comstock, Michigan

NAME: Oberon Ale

ABV: 5.8%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: American Wheat

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:An American wheat ale brewed with Saaz hops. Spicy and fruity, Oberon is the color and scent of a sunny afternoon.”

Bells Brewery is located in Michigan, so we don’t see a lot of the brewer’s beers out here on the West Coast. I first discovered Bells Best Brown Ale on a trip back to the Upper Peninsula of MI, so I made sure to try some more Bells when I went back to MI a few weeks ago.

Oberon has great carbonation, so pour it slowly; your goal is to produce about a one to two finger wide head for best flavor. Save the last inch or so of beer in the bottle and swirl the bottle around to mix up the yeast sediment left in the bottom of the bottle. Then pour the yeast into the glass. Doing so produces a hazy, soft orange color to the beer.

Oberon has very distinctive orange / tangerine aroma and flavor. Most of you who know me might recall that I’m not a super big fan of artificially flavored fruit beers. Oberon, however, has a very natural orange/ citrus flavor – one that doesn’t get too sweet or tiring on the taste buds. I am drinking the last one as I type this in my Manland and it is nearing 100 degrees inside the garage. I’m sweatin’ like a pig, but Oberon is the perfect beer to combat the heat – the carbonation and excellent flavor make it a perfect hot-weather beer. The only downside to this beer is the slightly higher ABV for a Summer beer. 5.8% isn’t that high, but the alcohol can sneak up on you since these are so easy to drink. The other bummer is that Oberon is only available in the following states: AL, FL, IA, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, OH, PA, VA, and WI. Let’s hope Bells expands distribution soon!

Do I really need to tell you that Oberon Ale earns a KICK ASS BEER AWARD?

BRAND: Newcastle, Caledonian Brewery, Edinburgh, UK

NAME: Summer Ale

ABV: 4.4%

IBUs: Not published; would guess in the low 10s to 20s

STYLE: English Bitter

BREWER’S DESCRIPTION:Summer Ale takes the edgy, unconventional character that is the hallmark of Newcastle Brown Ale and marries it with a lighter, more refreshing brew that is perfect for the long hot days and warm, sultry nights of summer. The recipe infuses Golden Promise and Optic Malts to provide a hoppier taste that is light in color. Newcastle Summer Ale also blends Fuggles and Super Styrian Goldings Hops, with Fuggles offering a mild hoppy.”

Many of you may have tried one of the beer world’s classic Brown Ales known as Newcastle. For years, the name has been synonymous with being a classic example of an English Brown Ale. 2010 marks the first year that I am aware of that the brewer offers a new beer style: Summer Ale. Classified as an English Bitter beer, Summer Ale is 180 degrees from the classic Brown Ale offering in the clear bottle.

Newkie Summer has a unique aroma – one that is slightly musty and bitter. It has a very English hop signature thanks to the Fuggles and Styrian hops. This is definitely not an American-style Summer beer. That bitterness is the focus of how the beer tastes as well: a lingering bitterness grabs your tongue as you sip the beer and the flavor hangs around in the back of your mouth for about 20 seconds post sip. It’s not an extreme bitterness like a 100 IBU IPA, but more of a light sour bitterness. Drink this brew very cold as it seems to improve the flavor.

SUMMING UP

Trying these beers was interesting as I think you don’t need to make a beer with fruit additives to produce a great Summer-style beer. How would I rate these beers in order of preference? Here they are …

1. Alaskan Summer. “Super sessonable.”
2. Bell’s Oberon. “Might be the ultimate Summer beer.”
3. Anchor Summer Brew. “Great flavor.”
4. Red Hook Rope Swing. “Pilsner + the Northwest.”
5. Sierra Nevada Summerfest. “Love the Munich malt meets American Lager taste.”
6. Firestone Walker Solace. “Someone get me a fish taco. STAT!”
7. Newcastle Summer Ale. “Yes I am bitter. You’ll get over it.”
8. Deschutes Twilight Ale. “Good Pacific Northwest Summer beer.”
9. Pyramid Curveball. “Bold Kölsch.”
10. Henry Weinhard’s Summer Ale. “An affordable Kölsch from a well known brewer.”
11. Gordon Biersch SommerBrau. “Decent Kölsch style.”
12. Saranac Summer Beer. “Drinkable despite its slight cereal-like sweetness.”
13. Sam Adams Summer Ale. “Ok, but not a big fan of the lemon flavor.”
14. New Belgium Skinny Dip. “Bold yeast, slighty musty.”
15. Blue Moon Honeymoon, “Too damn sweet.”
16. Widmer Brothers Sunburn. “Smells. Like. Cat. Pee.”

There you have it. Sixteen Summer-style brews. Please don’t be offended if I left out your favorite or dissed one of your go-to beers. We all have different tastes. Try a few of these great Summer brews and please be sure to let us know what you think!

Next up? A roundup of cheap American beers.

HAPPY SUMMER!

Holy crap on toast. That is a lot of reviewing to do. Well done bro! Looks like I have a lot (more) catching up to do.
Thanks, bud. This was a major undertaking...I was up for the task however! Thanks for reading ...
It's kind of like the twelve days of christmas, only better...
Nice beer porn. The typical candidates of great bees got the great reviews...makes a lot of sense because Anchor and Alaskan always have good offerings. Their smoked Porter was basically the reintroduction of the style to the US. Michael Jackson (no, not that one) himself held that particular beer in high regard. Some nice Kolsch styles on this list with, it seems to me, Skinny Dip being the most authentic Wheat. It's nice to see so many beers reviewed at once.
Thanks, Mike. Appreciate the comments and insight as always!
Very well done my friend!
Thanks Trav. Which of these brews have you tried?
Nice lineup, and I agree...that Anchor is awesome. Amazing photos too...what camera do you use. Oh yeah, that yellow manland table is great.
Hey Nate: thanks for the post. I use a 10 megapixel Canon Power Shot SD1200 IS. I bought it for $199 at Best Buy.

Most of the time I shoot in macro mode in the 4MG file size. I lightly hold the camera's shutter button down to focus on the glass, then press the button down.

I then import the picts into a program called paint.net. It has some Photoshop-like features for zero dollars. I first slightly adjust the saturation, do a quick sharpen function, then reduce the file dimensions to 800x600 at 96dpi for smaller file sizes and faster downloads.

I save all of my picts as PNG files.

The table was custom made and hand painted by yours truly!

Thanks!
Four new beers have been added to the review: Newcastle Summer Ale, Bell's Oberon Ale, Henry Weinhard's Summer Ale, and Firestone Walker's Solace. That's SIXTEEN Summer brews. Hope you guys find this review helpful during your summer beer buying ...
2011 UPDATE: I thought I'd bump this review so those of you who didn't have the opportunity to read it last Summer can check it out. Nearly all of these Summer beers are still available this year. Let me know if you have a chance to try some of these great Summer Brews. BARMEN! -- MLN
WOW! great reading. I love the selection although I'm not sure how many I could buy in Australia. I managed to find some Anchor beer from San Fransico over here and will agree that it is one tasty brew. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for when another shipment comes in. Cheers.
