DESCRIPTION: Being two hours away from Chico, CA, we are lucky to get all of the Sierra Nevada brews usually weeks ahead of the rest of the country. Here's another great SN offering: Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale. It's a nice drinking IPA that's not too aggressive. Here's what SN says about this Ale:

Our newest addition to our Harvest family is Southern Hemisphere Harvest. This is the first time we know of that an American brewer has put out a beer with fresh-picked hops from the southern hemisphere. The inaugural ale will debut in late April and will feature fresh Pacific Hallertau, New Zealand Motueka and New Zealand Southern Cross hops, all from New Zealand.

Like our Celebration Ale, the fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, we went to the added expense of flying these hops from New Zealand to Chico so we could brew with them the week after they were picked.”

POUR/TASTE: Southern Harvest pours with a nice amount of carbonation so pour slowly. (See the pour video.) It has the classic amber / rust color of a good IPA. There's a very subtle caramel / hop smell in the aroma – nothing too overwhelming.

The taste: You can tell there are different hop varieties used in Harvest. It doesn’t have the typical piney, citrus flavor most IPAs have. Instead, there's a very subtle hop bitterness that sits on top of the caramel malt. In short, it's an easy beer to drink and it would be a good one to introduce new beer drinkers to craft beer.

BUY IT AGAIN? Not sure. The more I get into good IPAs, the more I am liking super bitter beers. Southern Harvest is excellent nonetheless … yet another killer beer from Sierra Nevada.

Since no one replied to this original review ... (BASTARDS!), I just picked up the "Northern" version of this beer tonight with undried hops from Yakima Washington. These hops are in the brew kettle within 24 hours of them being picked from the hop vine. You can tell the difference. The Northern version has some of the most fresh, bitter, ripe hop oil flavor I've tasted. If you like IPAs and hop bitterness ... try a Northern Hemisphere Harvest brew.... IPA fans take note.

Not sure how i missed this when you posted it.  I love the 2011 Southern Hemisphere Harvest.  The best one of the series to date.  Looking for the most recent offering.   I sent Gooch a bottle of the Southern.  He loved it too.

Thanks for the reply, Lukester ...

The Northern version is totally different than the Southern. Different hops in this one. The Southern reminds me more of a traditional English IPA whereas the Northern has the class American hop IPA bite. Let me know if you find it.

I had it last year and highly approved of it.  We went to Flagstaff today and NOBODY has it yet.  Will contiue the search until "satisfaction" has been achieved.

Finally found the 2011 Northern Hemisphere Harvest.  Sitting here wearing one out as I type this, wondering what it tastes like.  Between being sick and dead taste buds from a career in the navy, I can't taste much right now.  I had Some fairly strong curry beef for supper and couldn't taste it either so I guess I am just S.O.L.  What little bit I can taste kind of tells me it would be a bit too much hoppiness for me if I could taste the full flavor.  I will just have to keep trying it until I can taste it properly.
